Every year, hundreds of millions of tonnes of goods are transhipped in the Netherlands, from liquid bulk to dry bulk, from breakbulk to containers. The five Deep Sea Terminals in Rotterdam alone handle around 8 million containers annually. Loading and unloading containers is a delicate operation. Only the right person can take or bring a container.

Access to a terminal takes place under strict conditions, especially if it concerns an ISPS location. Every person who enters the terminal must prove who he is, who he works for, what he is doing and whether he has the right instructions and permits.  Once at the terminal, an efficient logistical process is in place to load or unload containers safely and quickly.

Every minute counts in container logistics. It is therefore not surprising that XS-ID services are commonplace in the container sector. Thanks to XS-ID, the truck turnaround time has been reduced by more than 60%. This leads to annual savings of around 100 million euros.

Oplossing: CargoCard / Digital Safety Passport / PortKey / interface

On Maasvlakte 2, the ultramodern and advanced container terminal of Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) provides 24/7 secure, reliable, sustainable and efficient container handling in Rotterdam, Europe's main transit port. The company is a leader in innovation, safety and sustainability.

RWG uses the CargoCard from Secure Logistics to guarantee security, to be able to switch efficiently and to remain competitive at a global level,' says Richard Pronk, securitymanager at RWG.

Significant time savings
Pronk: 'About 2,000 drivers visit the terminal every day. The use of the CargoCard, including biometric verification, means that drivers can continue their journey immediately, and the number of checks has been significantly reduced. The checks that are carried out are much faster. In the six years since it opened, a number of improvements have taken place. Now, some 98 percent of drivers can pass through the gate without any problems.

Our terminal offers "Seamless access to Europe" and Secure Logistics' solution certainly contributes to this. It is an efficient and also safe system in all respects,' says Pronk. Contractors, rowers and other visitors use Portkeys and the Digital Safety Passport to gain access to the terminal.  Biometric verification is also used here to ensure fast and secure access.

The collaboration with Secure Logistics
Pronk gives the collaboration with Secure Logistics a high score of 7.5. He says he sees room for improvement in the use of the Portkey and the Digital Safety Passport. Where it all runs smoothly for the drivers, it does not always run smoothly for the other users. Pronk is a great supporter of both XS-key and XS-ID. Secure Logistics contributes to the safety of the port area and that is important, concludes Pronk.
